not 100% sure I agree with the practice.... I know in 99% of the time it saves wasting the doctors time.... but there are pepole like me (according to you lot) who understate the symptoms.... could it not be a case of a doctor missing something and the patient ending up dead and the doctor with a malpractice case on their hands for missing something that would have been obvious IF the doctor had seen said patient

| telephone consults should only be for continuation of existing problems or for discussions on results of tests. If there is any new problem happening then patients are ALWAYS encouraged to see a GP face to face. Telephone calls can amount to another full surgery on top of those being seen face to face, so anything to lessen the calls. It's getting the balance right - A lot of things are just putting minds at rest for most people. Ahh see the other side of surgery practice | |

| Ah but at our surgery.... we have to..... 1) phone the surgery to make an appointment for the doctor to phone you back 2) wait for the doctor to phone you back 3) tell the doctor what is wrong 4) then and ONLY then does the doctor make an appointment (the next day at the earliest (normally)) If and ONLY IF the doctor thinks it needed
if you fail to emphersise (sp) a symptom the doctor could well miss something...
example... (and see healing thread)
our next door neighbour phoned the doctor on monday complaining of a "bad back", which has been getting worse for about a week, the doctor told him to take pain killers but carry on as normal "as resting it does not help".... so he carried on working
today he went to see the doctor (without phoneing) as the pain was very bad.....
He is now in casulty and having had a scan he has been told that the "spongey bit" between 3 of his disks have "slipped out" and he has vertibrates rubbing bone on bone". the hospital have compleatly immobilised him while they do some more tests to find out the extent of the damage to his spine....
So much for the doctors diagnosis over the phone....
what will happen IF the damage done to his back has permantitly damaged the nerves in his back (which at the moment they are not sure about)....
one doctor sued and possably struck off for negligent as he failed to Diagnose the problem because he had failed to make an appointment to see the patient as "it was only back ache"

| I'm sorry to hear that too. I've had a lot of problems with my left arm this year, I went to dr's she admitted she didn't know what it was asked how long i'd had the pain when I said over two months she said ' well take ibuprofen three times a day for two weeks and if it's no better come back' they treat the symptoms only these days, what is the point in that? Naturally it might have hurt less but only because the pain was masked by drugs, if it's been bad for so long a few poxy painkillers won't cure it DOH | |
