Music:
Some people can use anything but you can get all sorts these days Native American Indian cd's, gregorian chants, pan pipes etc.
Libraries do loan out cd's now so it doesn't have to be expensive to find what you like but some prefer and work better with no music at all.

Smells:
Smells can enhance meditation, so what smells make you feel good and relaxed ? Fresh flowers, incense, oils. even a perfume, again, some people don't like smells and may find them distracting.

The right room:
I really feel this should be a room you feel really comfy in, but you can also meditate outside in your garden in the countryside or even by the sea using the scents and sounds of nature itself.

External noise:
External noises, kids playing outside, next door's dog barking etc can be distracting (if you allow it to be,) earphones can be useful to help shut out any such distractions but it's also handy if you can learn to meditate with some noises. It's virtually impossible to find total silence.
I'm sure I've mentioned before that in the group I attended we were meditating while there were teens banging on the windows, so how did we deal with that? Well your first reaction is to jump but we went past that, it taught us discipline and we weren't going to allow them to distract us. If you hear a sudden noise just think 'right that's ok but i'm going to continue regardless' tell yourself it doesn't matter then let it go.
It is even easier to ignore if you're focussing on something mentally or otherwise, ie gazing at something like a candle flame whilst meditating,

You can practice this at a time when you're not meditating too for instance, you know when you're reading something really interesting you can virtually shut off what is around you, kids scrapping or dogs barking etc. practice this see how well you can shut off noise when doing everyday things.

Clearing the mind:
Again I feel this is something you could practice before you meditate, visualise your mind as a room and all your thoughts are in boxes at the front of that room, ie against your brow visualise pushing all those boxes to the back, so you can visualise the area at the front as being 'clear' the thoughts are still there you haven't removed them, you've just pushed them to the back of your mind.
As mad as this sounds I've used this a lot with success.

Another way is to allow the thoughts to come then let them go (as with the banging on the windows earlier,) you can practice this while doing something mundane too, and then try it just before you meditate.

Regularity just my own opinion but i think if you set a 'rota' to meditate it can help, especially if you're hoping to 'connect' with your guides in meditation

of course some people meditate purely for stress relief, illness or peace of mind and for these reasons meditation is good when you can fit it in and as often as you feel comfy with.

the other meditation for hopefully contacting guides etc i think it makes sense to set your self maybe one or two nights a week (or mornings if you prefer) and try to keep to that timetable, it's unrealistic to promise yourself to do a full meditation every single day and that alone can put immense pressure on you and in turn can affect the quality of the mediation and possibly 'block' you
a once a week excellent meditation is better than 7 small harassed ones imo

a deep relaxation before meditation can help too.

if you find it hard to relax why not pamper yourself with a special bath with relaxing oils etc just before the med, and make make it your special time
