| Chief Joseph led his people to freedom in Canada, with the U.S. Army in constant pursuit. For more than 1,000 miles, with women, children, sick, elderly and wounded, he out-manouvered, fought to a standstill or defeated 10 seperate U.S. army units. Trapped within 20 miles of the Canadian border, he managed to sneak his people into Canada at night. He stayed behind with those too sick or injured to travel and surrendered in the morning. After he surrendered, he went to Washington to meet President Hayes to plead the case of his people. He was promised safe return to his home in Wallowa Valley but was instead sent to a non Nez Perce Indian reservation in Washington where he died of a broken heart, longing for his homeland. He is one of the greatest mililtary geniuses in American history, his strategies and tactics are still studied at West Point today. He was known as a humanitarian and a peacemaker because he resisted the removal of Native Americans from their lands.
